Beginner's Yoga Course

This week is ideal for beginners, or those new to Sivananda Yoga. This course gives you the full yogic experience, progressively introducing yoga  asanas, breathing exercises, meditation, mantra chanting and yoga philosophy. You will be immersed in the daily routine of yoga and will experience wholesome vegetarian meals. You will leave rested and refreshed with the basic knowledge of how to continue to practice at home.

Curriculum

  • Step by step guide to the basic 12 postures, explanation of benefits of the postures
  • What is classical yoga? Intro to the tradition
  • lineage of the Masters
  • What is the purpose and what are the methods of classical yoga?
  • Basic philosophy about happiness, health, life, freedom
  • Difference between yoga asana and physical exercises
  • Yogic techniques of breathing
  • Vegetarianism-the how and why
  • Relaxation and stress management
  • Positive thinking
  • Basic technique of meditation
  • The yogic daily routine

Daily Schedule

6-8am Satsang: Silent meditation, chanting and lecture
8-10am Yoga Class
10am Brunch
11am Karma Yoga
1-3pm Beginners Workshop
3-4pm Free Time and Nature walks
4-6pm Yoga Class
6pm Dinner
7-8pm Free Time
8-10pm Satsang: meditation, chanting and lecture

Pre-requisite

There are no prerequisites other than a sincere desire to learn classical yoga.

Cost

$75 plus accommodations for 5 nights.

Arrival and Departure

The course will begin at 7pm on Sunday, July 22nd with orientation followed by Satsang, and will end at 3pm on Friday, July 27th.

 

We encourage you to arrive by 4pm on Sunday, making the most out of the afternoon by joining us for the Asana class and dinner. You are always welcome and encouraged to extend your stay to any length before or after the course. Please indicate your desired arrival and departure dates on your registration form (click 'register' below).

What to Bring

Textbook:

Essentias of Yoga Practice and Philosophy by Swami Sitaramananda

Other:  slip on shoes, loose comfortable clothing, writing materials, meditation shawl or blanket, yoga mat, flashlight.

All books and materials are available in our boutique.

To reserve a place for this course, please register online or email yogafarmregistration@sivananda.org. Then please call to give us your credit card deposit and confirm your reservation.
A deposit paying for your first night's stay is required for your reservation. Please note that in case of cancellation, no refund will be given. A credit note for other programs at the Yoga Farm (valid for one year) will be given.

Shambhu DasAbout Shambhu Das
Shambhu Das lived locally in Nevada City and has been coming to the Yoga Farm for many years as a guest and karma yogi before deciding to take TTC in Oct. 2010. Every since TTC he has stayed on as Staff and has taught many open classes, beginner courses, and Prana & Pranayama weekends. He helps out in all facets of the operation of the ashram, from building & maintenance, to office & advertising and is indeed a multi-talented individual.
